Member Committees: The Heart of our Work

Member Committees, affiliated with ACFR, have unique meeting and membership requirements designed to respond to their specific locale.  We encourage you to contact a Committee near you to learn more (Use the map below).  If you do not live near a Committee, you may join as an “At Large” member.

The Committees participate in the ACFR Speakers Program which provides prominent speakers at the ready edge of responsibility and expertise regarding timely foreign policy issues & events, hosting sitting Ambassadors, former Ambassadors, State Department officials, Officers of the military, policy experts & more from leading foreign relations organizations and consultancies in the nation. Many also engage local foreign relations experts pertinent to their local markets and conditions.

The Member Committee meetings, usually on a monthly basis, are the heart of our work.  Those meetings generally provide an opportunity to meet the speaker, engage in discussion, and gain additional knowledge and information.

As a Member Committee of the American Committees on Foreign Relations (ACFR), many actively participate in the ACFR Annual Conference, the Young Leaders Initiative and as a member of the ACFR Board of Directors.

The Member Committees were originally founded by the Council of Foreign Relations in 1938.  In 1995, through mutual agreement, the Committees separated to form ACFR, maintaining headquarters in Washington D.C. Comprised of those Member Committees, with over 1200 individual members, AFCR promotes rigorous and informed foreign relations discussions--out of the beltway--across the U.S.
